Alireza Eftekhari Killed

Alireza Eftekhari was a 29-year-old journalist from Tehran who contributed to the Abrar-e Eqtesadi newspaper over the last five years of his life. Eftekhari was the only journalist to be killed during the suppression of peaceful protests that occurred after the disputed reelection of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as president in June 2009. Eftekhari’s body was handed over to his family on July 13.

Eftekhari was killed on June 15, 2009, when he was struck with a baton to the head which resulted in a fatal brain hemorrhage. Reporters Without Borders confirmed his death on July 20, 2009.

After his disappearance, Radio Farda quoted a relative of Eftekhari, who said, “He [Eftekhari] was always very calm and the whole family knew that he’d never hurt a fly. When someone offended or insulted him, he would keep it to himself. Alireza was a composed individual and he’d never even been in a fight. It is not clear what happened to him while he was out on the streets but he did not return home on the night of June 15.”

Eventually, 27 days after Alireza Eftekhari was last seen by his family, they were informed that he had died and that his body was in Kahrizak Forensic Medical Center.

Reza Miani, the director of the Persian language section of Reporters Without Borders, spoke to Radio Farda in October 2014, saying, “As a result of the blow, he suffered a brain hemorrhage. It is not clear whether he was taken to hospital after the beating, whether he died due to deliberate negligence, whether there was any attempt to take him to a hospital or whether he died when he was actually struck. However, what is clear is that on July 13, 2009, the authorities handed his body over to his family and they were strongly pressured to remain silent about his death.”

Eftekhari was the main breadwinner of his family. His father was in poor physical condition and his mother called Alireza her “cane and support.” Authorities or media outlets inside Iran never followed up on his case or his family's situation.
