Amirabbas Azarmvand Awaiting trial

Amir-Abbas Azarmvand is an economics journalist and labor activist. He was arrested on September 1, 2021 by agents of the Ministry of Intelligence in Tehran.

"At 8:30 a.m. on September 1, 2021, security forces affiliated with the Ministry of Intelligence raided the house of Amir-Abbas Azarmvand’s father,” one of Azarmvand’s colleagues told Journalism is Not a Crime. “The court order accused him of propaganda against the regime, and he was arrested. As far as we know, he is being interrogated in Ward 209 of Evin Prison by agents of the Ministry of Intelligence of Ebrahim Raisi’s government."

This colleague and friend of Azarmvand described the reason for the accusation and arrest as "reporting on the miserable situation of the workers and criticizing the oppressive economic policies" of the Islamic Republic, and added that, as well as the arrests, officers searched Azarmvand’s father's home and confiscated the journalist’s personal belongings such as cell phones, laptops and books.

Azarmvand, who is an economics editor for "Gostaresh-e Sanat" newspaper, had previously been arrested during December 2018 and January 2020 workers' protest rallies.

In recent years, Azarmvand has played a significant role in reporting on the situation of workers and workers' rallies throughout Iran, and is known as a left-wing and pro-workers journalist in Iran.

Azarmvand was finally released from Evin Prison on September 23, 2021, after 20 days, on a 500 million toman bail. The date of the journalist's trial has not yet been set.
