Ezoldin Hashemi is a manager of the Voice of the [Turkmen] Sahra Telegram channel. The channel, which has about 4,000 followers, covers news regarding the Turkmen Sahra, an ethnic minority that live in the province of Golestan and around Iran's northeast region. Hashemi is also a civil activist in the city of Kalaleh.
In the fall of 2019, Hashemi, along with Vali Ghalichi, another manager of the Voice of the Sahra channel, published several posts that were critical of the actions of members of Iran's parliament.
According to an informed source at the Tuhra news website, which is affiliated with human rights activists for the Turkmen Sahra, both Ghalichi and Hashemi were summoned by judicial authorities because of the posts on their Telegram channel.
The source also said that the Voice of the Sahra channel had published posts critical of the dismissal and appointment of a number of regional officials in the Turkmen Sahra region of Iran.
In late November 2020, Hashemi received a message from the Iranian judiciary informing him that Branch 1 of the Prosecutor’s Office of Kalaleh had issued an arrest warrant for him and Vali Ghalichi.
The arrest warrant said the charges against Hashemi and Ghalichi were “disturbing the public mind” and “spreading lies.”
The judiciary message stated that the warrant to summon Hashemi to the Prosecutor’s Office had been issued in accordance with Article 211 and Article 746 of the Islamic Penal Codes, and Article 265 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
No information has been released so far about whether Ezoldin Hashemi and Vali Ghalichi have reported to the Prosecutor’s Office or whether they have been arrested.
