Keyvan Mehregan Released

Keyvan Mehregan has been arrested several times in recent years – the first time during the aftermath of the disputed 2009 presidential election, when he was the political editor at Etemad.

On August 26th 2015, he was arrested once again and sent to Evin Prison to serve a one-year prison sentence. He was released on May 11th 2016.

In the days following his arrest, Keyvan Mehregan's whereabouts remained unknown despite the fact his brother wrote a letter to Sadegh Larijani, the Judiciary Chief, demanding the judiciary find out where he was and process his case. It was later revealed he had been in solitary confinement at Ward 209 of Evin Prison where he remained for two months.

During that time, he had to be to the prison clinic several times. He was eventually released on bail on March 2nd 2010. His case was sent to Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court, which was presided by Judge Salavati who sentenced him to three years in prison but then suspended the sentence for four years. On December 7th 2010, he was arrested for a second time at Shargh newspaper headquarters with several other reporters. He was once again sent to solitary confinement at Ward 209 of Evin Prison where he remained until his release on bail on January 17th 2011. His third arrest was on June 13th 2011 after he attended the funeral of Hoda Saber, a journalist and political activist who died due to medical neglect whilst on hunger strike in prison.

Mehregan was tried at Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court presided by Judge Salavati who sentenced him to a year in prison and banned him from engaging in any journalistic or political activities for five years. He spent two months in detention before being released on bail. On January 28th 2013 Mehregan was summoned to court on new charges and was arrested a fourth time. He was detained at Evin Prison until February 23rd when he was released on bail.

On August 26th 2015, he was arrested once again and sent to Evin Prison to serve his one-year prison sentence. Mehregan’s wife, Afsaneh Parchekani, wrote on her Facebook page:

“Keyvan Mehregan went to the passport office on Wednesday where he was told he was under arrest. They sent him to Evin Prison. After speaking to the judge, we found out he was arrested for the Shargh newspaper case four years ago.”
