Mostafa Izadi Released

Mostafa Izadi, from Najafabad, Isfahan, is a journalist and the editor-in-chief and owner of of the banned weekly Ava, who was arrested by security agents at his home on the morning of December 28, 2009, on the eve of Ayatollah Hussein-Ali Montazeri's funeral.

Agents of the Ministry of Intelligence searched his home, confiscated some of his personal belongings, and arrested him.

Earlier, Ava weekly, of which Izadi was the owner and the editor-in-chief during the years of its publication (1997 to 2000), was banned by Saeed Mortazavi on the pretext of politically promoting Ayatollah Hussein-Ali Montazeri's beliefs. Montazeri was one of the leading figures of the 1979 Islamic Revolution but later became a critic of the Islamic Republic and a proponent of equal rights for all Iranian citizens.

Izadi's case was heard in Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Pirabbasi. He was charged with “propaganda against the regime” and “disturbing public order,” but the court's outcome and verdict were not released to the media.

Izadi is the author of more than 400 articles in the country's reformist newspapers.

He was released on bail on February 2, 2010.
