Nasrin Vaziri Released

Nasrin Vaziri spent 23 days in detention between after being arrested on December 28th 2009.

Vaziri was arrested during the aftermath of the presidential election of 2009 and the ensuing street protests, and was charged with propaganda against the regime. At the time of her arrest, she was a political correspondent and parliamentary reporter for the ILNA and Khabar Online. Although she was released on bail in January 2010, her case remains open.

In the days following Vaziri’s detainment, the authorities failed to notify her family of her whereabouts or the reason for her arrest. When her family inquired about her, the prosecutor’s office denied having arrested her.

Vaziri’s arrest was not an isolated incident. “Numerous women’s rights campaigners, female journalists and relatives are being arrested and persecuted as authorities in the Islamic Republic of Iran attempt to repress masses of Iranians from advocating civil rights in recent weeks,” reported the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran.

“It is evident that the authorities are singling out women’s rights activists and arbitrarily arresting them, as well as female journalists, in the context of recent public demonstrations,” said Aaron Rhodes, a spokesperson for a campaign to have women’s activists released.

After 23 days in detention, Nasrin Vaziri was released on bail on January 21st, 2010. Like many other journalists in Iran, her case remains open.
