Aman Mohammad Khojmali Awaiting trial

Aman Mohammad Khojmali is a journalist and president of the National Unity Party, a reformist political party founded in 2015, for the city of Gonbad-e Kavus. Khojmali was arrested for the third time just before the February 2020 parliamentary elections. He was eventually sentenced to pay a fine.

On the morning of February 9, 2020, Khojmali was arrested at his home in the village of Halli Akhund by intelligence and security police officers from the Gonbad-e Kavus law enforcement department. Khojmali’s arrest warrant was issued by Branch 4 of the Prosecutor’s Office for Gonbad-e Kavus. However, as the prosecutor in Khojmali’s case failed to appear in court, after being informed of the official charges against him Khojmali was released from detention on bail that same day until the end of the court proceedings against him.

Khojmali was sentenced to pay a fine of four million tomans after having been convicted of “spreading lies” in Branch 102 of the Gonbad-e Kavus judiciary, presided over by Judge Mikael Hajizadeh. On August 13, 2020, Khojmali spoke about the trial, saying: “After the court issued its verdict, I appealed the ruling in the Court of Appeals. The Court of Appeals forgave half of the four million toman fine and confirmed that I would be forced to pay the remaining fine of two million tomans. The Enforcement of Sentences Branch of Gonbad-e Kavus judiciary additionally reduced the total fine by 20%, meaning that I was required to pay a total of 1,600,000 tomans to the court account.”

Khojmali also spoke about the evidence that the court had provided to support the verdict in his case, saying: “A few of the articles that I had published previously, which covered a variety of different topics [were given as evidence]. In one of them I covered a letter to [former president Mohammad] Khatami, another was an article about the [now deceased Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, Quds Division] Commander Qassem Soleimani, and another was one of my reports entitled 'Masked Thieves,' which was about the economic crisis in Iran. My legal case was opened following a complaint from the security agencies, but I have been summoned and arrested on numerous occasions by the judicial and security authorities.”

Khojmali was arrested and tried twice before on charges of “publishing lies” and “disturbing public opinion” but he was eventually acquitted on both charges.

Aman Mohammad Khojmali regularly publishes posts, articles and content about social problems and current affairs on his Telegram channel, called Tomorrow of Freedom.

On June 23, 2021, Khojamli was arrested by security forces of Gonbad Kavous because of his posts to his Telegram channel.

The interrogator of Branch 5 of the Gonbad Kavous refused to release him on bail and he remained in custody in Gonbad Kavous prison until July 5.

A hearing on his charges was held on August 24, 2021 in the Revolutionary Court of Gonbad Kavous.

Ahmad Moradpour, Khojmali’s lawyer, told Ulkamiz news agency at the time: "The first session of his trials was held by Gonbad Kavus Revolutionary Court presided over by Judge Teymouri on the charges of founding and running a Telegram channel with the intent to disturb the national security."
