Hamed Hadian, a journalist, was summoned to Branch 2 of the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor's Office of Tehran (District 23 – Special Representative Office) on August 18, 2020, for preparing a video report on water supply problems in the Ghazaniyeh region of Khuzestan. He was charged with the accusation of “publishing lies” by the court.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps Commander for Khuzestan province was named as the plaintiff against Hadian in the case. Hadian, who is a principilist, a member of the hardline conservative faction in Iran, and journalist, had narrated a video report, which had been commissioned by Shahrara News Internet and Television Network, on water supply problems in one of the villages of Khuzestan. His report was published on social media networks and it was shared and read widely on Twitter and Instagram.
Hadian on Twitter described himself as a “Reporter without Borders” and “one of the devoted disciples of Abbas,” referring to Abbas ibn Ali, the son of the first Shia Imam, Ali, and a prominent figure within Shia Islam who was martyred at the Battle of Karbala. A number of his articles and reports have been published on hardline conservative and Principalist-affiliated websites and news sites. Hadian is also one of the main writers for the official website of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran.
For nearly two years, Hamed Hadian worked as a journalist and senior member of the editorial board for the Hamshahri Javan publication, a young person’s magazine which is affiliated with the Hamshahri Press Institute. Hadian resigned from the magazine after managerial changes made the paper more reformist-leaning.
Hadian currently works with a number of different online and internet media outlets. The majority of Hadian's reports have focussed on the impoverished state of rural areas in Iran and corruption among Iranian officials.
Previously, another news report byHadian attracted widespread attention from social media users. This video report described the situation in Mahshahr after clashes between security forces and the town’s inhabitants in December 2019. The video provoked strong reactions when it was released. In reaction to the report, a number of journalists stated that they too had prepared news stories on the situation in Mahshahr but had not been allowed to publish them. They also claimed that Hadian had been protected from any backlash in relation to the controversial report because of his close relationship with the Office of the Supreme Leader of Iran.
