Nasim Soltan Beigi Released

Authorities have arrested journalist Nasim Soltan Beigi three times since 2006.
“My crime is believing, believing that in a humane world the wolves are not human. My crime is counting the days till we achieve this realm of humanity.”

Although she was pardoned in 2013, Islamic courts previously charged her with propaganda against the regime and conspiracy to harm national security. During her time at Evin prison, she spent more than 60 days in solitary confinement and was subjected to harsh interrogations.

Nasim Soltan Beigi was first arrested on June 12th 2006, during a demonstration held by women's rights activists in Haft-e Tir square. She was released on bail after eight days in solitary confinement in Ward 209 of Evin Prison.

Soltan Beigi went on trial on September 15th 2007, at Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court presided by Judge Salavati. She was given a two year suspended sentence on charges of “illegal assembly” and “conspiracy against national security.”

She was arrested for the second time on December 3rd 2007, during a student rally – this time she spent 56 days in detention, 40 of which were spent in solitary confinement before being released on bail.

Then, in 2010, Soltan Beigi was arrested a third time. On November 30th of that year, Judge Salavati of Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court sentenced her to six years in prison - three years for activities against national security, one year for propaganda against the regime and two years for her 2007 conviction.

However, she appealed and was acquitted of propaganda against the regime with her three-year conviction for activities against national security being suspended for two years. This meant her sentence was reduced to a total of three years in prison.

Soltan Beigi began serving time at Evin Prison on October 13th, 2012. “And the Earth spun until finally it stopped at the point where Evin is,” she wrote on her Facebook page before leaving for jail. “The bells rang again, the doors were knocked and the summons arrived. It’s time to depart, and the clamors of moments are a relentless call for readiness. These are strange times my darling - times when even insiders are being imprisoned, much less us outsiders.”

“Darkness may naively believe that it has the power to enchain freedom,” she wrote. “My crime is believing, believing that in a humane world the wolves are not human. My crime is counting the days till we achieve this realm of humanity.”

On April 12th 2013, upon returning to Evin prison after a 25-day furlough, she was told she had been pardoned and could return home.
