My Stealthy Freedom is an online social movement commenced by Iranian journalist Masih Alinejad on May 3, 2014. It started as a Facebook page where women from inside Iran could share photos of themselves not wearing the Islamic headscarf, which is compulsory in Iran.
But the page has not been limited to this symbolic gesture against forced hejab. It has turned into an effective platform for many Iranian girls and women — those silent members of Iranian society whose voices had not been heard in either domestic or foreign media. It has become a hub for citizen journalists who feel a responsibility toward what goes around them.
As My Stealthy Freedoms grew in popularity, it was predictable that the Iranian regime would respond as it normally does to powerful displays of self-expression — with threats, accusations and insults.
This documentary follows Masih Alinejad, who tells the story of My Stealthy Freedom: how the page came into being and why it became so popular – and what followed from there.
The My Stealthy Freedom page was developed on Facebook photograph by photograph and text by text. So we decided to follow this example, presenting our documentary scene by scene on Facebook. In fact, these videos are part of the production process, so you can participate in the final product too. Send us your views— for, against, critical or approving —and your questions as videos:
